The residential and commercial electricity rates in the deregulated markets(link to article 1) of the United States arenΓÇÖt the same for everyone as rates vary from supplier to supplier, unlike in the regulated states, where thereΓÇÖs a single utility monopoly in the energy market.
There are many energy consumers ΓÇö mostly large-scale businesses ΓÇö that operate in more than one state. Thus, many of them incidentally are part of both regulated and deregulated energy markets. In addition, there are also residents who migrate between states.
Now, for these multi-site organizations and residents moving between states, it is imperative that they understand the difference between the regulated and deregulated energy markets so as to make the best energy procurement decision.
Regulated Electricity Markets are characterized by the presence of vertically-integrated monopoly utilities who own, control and operate the entire electricity supply chain ΓÇö right from electricity generation and transmission to distribution, operation, and maintenance. Examples include Florida, Georgia, Colorado, Idaho, and Kentucky.
Deregulated Electricity Markets, on the other hand, feature participants other than utilities who own and control electricity generation. They sell the generated electricity into a wholesale market, from where retail energy suppliers (also known as LSEs ΓÇö Load Serving Entities) purchase the electricity and sell it to the end consumers. There are also numerous resellers some of whom are independent and other subsidiaries of the regulated utilities. Deregulated electricity markets include California (very limited), Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia (very limited) and Washington D.C.
So, in a nutshell, regulated electricity markets are those where you cannot choose who you buy your electricity from, and deregulated electricity markets are those where you can choose your energy supplier.
Currently, there are 17 deregulated states where you can opt for an energy supplier of your choice.
HereΓÇÖs a site map of the regulated and the functioning deregulated energy markets in the US.
Thus, a deregulated electricity market promotes healthy competition among suppliers, enhances quality, leads to competitive pricing options for consumers, encourages innovation, and eliminates unproductive statutory requirements.
Energy deregulation has its own set of merits and demerits. While multiple players can lead to healthy competition that could bring the electricity rates down for both residential and commercial electricity consumers, lack of regulation could lead to unsavory business practices. Debates and discussions still rage around energy deregulation; several observers claim that with a proper model energy deregulation could be a success.
Residential and commercial energy consumers can compare the electricity rates provided by suppliers in their area, and then opt for the electricity supplier who offers the best options at the most reasonable rates through excellent websites like UtilityDiscount.com that provide quick and easy access to transparent pricing.
While there are several factors that influence the cost of your electricity, primary among them are:
Fuel cost, maintenance and operation cost of the power plants and the transmission and distribution system, and weather conditions in your area can also influence your electricity bill significantly.
ΓùÅ Get a professional energy audit company to assess your energy needs and help you optimize your energy consumption.
ΓùÅ Go for equipment and lighting solutions that consume less electricity.
ΓùÅ Educate employees/family members and encourage energy efficient practices at workplace/home.
ΓùÅ Switch off any equipment when not in use.
ΓùÅ Go for programmable thermostats that can automatically adjust workplace/home temperature.
ΓùÅ Reduce artificial light consumption and use as much daylight as possible.
ΓùÅ Opt for solar panels. It may not seem like a cost-efficient solution in the short-run, but in the long-term, it pays off. By going for solar panels, you can also take advantage of tax breaks, rebates, and other energy efficiency incentives.
